Ongoing project

Finland is a land of tens of thousands of lakes and rivers. The watershed Vuoksi is the biggest watershed in Finland and situated in eastern Finland. Vuoksi drainage systems are treasures with global value; they are part of our age-old cultural-ecological heritage.

Now these waters are being used for wastewater by the Talvivaara mining company. These activities are causing the destruction of wilderness areas and ruining the possibilities and reputations of the local tourist industry and the image of Finland as a whole.

My aim is not to photograph environment disaster directly; I am rather anthropological than critical. I am considering human construction and consumption on the Finnish landscape, paying attention to land use, environmentalism and national identity. The primary goal is to account for and evaluate multiple possibilities that existed for making, exhibiting, and interpreting landscape photographs.
